Spoiled by the Sun: Nature Park Frankenhöhe

The entire forest of Burgbernheim lies within the 1100 km² Nature Park Frankenhöhe - one of the sunniest areas in southern Germany, where extreme changes in weather are rare. This moderate climate contributes to the status of Burgbernheim as an officially recognized resort. The park’s climate — along with one of the lowest population densities in Bavaria - offers not only favorable conditions to its human inhabitants but also to many plant and animal species.

Natural Beauties

Numerous undeveloped small valleys and southern slopes continue to provide shelter for a wide variety of plants and animals. Wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum), orchids (several), yellow pheasant’s eye (Adonis vernalis), pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris), wild tulips (Tulipa sylvestris) and many other rare species thrive here in abundance. Animal species number between 25,000 and 30,000. For comparison, the entire number of species in Germany is approximately 40,000. As you explore the hillsides and forests, you may discover wild boar and fallow deer, encounter foxes and martens and observe birds aplenty.

Grown throughout History

The hills of the park offer magnificent panoramas. Castles like Virnsberg, Schillingsfürst or Colmberg are visible reminders of the people who settled and cultivated the land since at least the early middle ages. But there are culinary cues, too. The many fish ponds have inspired the designation “Germany’s Premier Carp Region”. This tender fish can be enjoyed fried, simmered or smoked in country inns all over, along with an excellent Franconion wine or a local brew.
