The Source of the Altmühl
The Altmühl river flows into the Black Sea via the Danube. Even on the oldest maps, the source of the Altmühl is shown near the settlement of Erlach in the forest of Burgbernheim. In 1904 the Royal Bavarian Hydrotechnological Office in Munich defined the origin of the Altmühl as the drain of the pond of Hornau. Since of all the waterways, which contribute to that pond, the spring near Erlach produces the greatest volume of water, it can be considered the source of the river.
